South Carolina records a 41 percent postsecondary enrollment gap between rural and urban high-school graduates. The proposed equine-assisted college preparation program targets measurable improvements in leadership and teamwork metrics that correlate with higher application completion and persistence rates.
State education department data show that students in the 21 counties outside the I-85 corridor submit college applications at rates 19 points lower than peers in Charleston and Greenville metro areas. These counties contain fewer than four college-prep counselors per 1,200 juniors and seniors. Equine-based activities will be scheduled on existing private and university farms in the Midlands and Upstate to introduce structured goal-setting and responsibility tracking without duplicating existing 4-H or FFA offerings.
Program design requires participating high schools to identify 12–15 juniors per cohort who have not yet completed a FAFSA or met with an admissions representative. Activities will incorporate weekly mounted and ground-based exercises that assign clear leadership roles, followed by written reflection on task delegation and outcome evaluation. Pre- and post-program surveys will measure changes in self-reported teamwork efficacy using validated scales from the National Association of College Admission Counseling.
Outcome tracking will center on verified college acceptance and first-semester GPA data collected through participating school districts. The initiative differs from North Carolina and Georgia equivalents because South Carolina lacks a statewide dual-enrollment equine studies pathway; therefore, the program must embed explicit college navigation instruction rather than assuming participants can access such coursework independently.
Partner schools in the Pee Dee and Lowcountry regions will receive priority placement to address documented counselor shortages exceeding state averages by 34 percent.
